Practical test

You will pass if you can satisfy the examiner that you can:

    • read a car number plate 20m away
    • drive safely and competently on various types of roads and traffic conditions
    • do the set maneuvers accurately, under control, and safely with proper observations

Plus answering 2 questions based on basic vehicle maintenance and operational checks, for example;

“SHOW ME how you would use your windscreen washer wipers.”

“TELL ME how you would check that the brakes are working on this car.”

The examiner will give you directions clearly and in good time. At some point during the drive, the examiner will incorporate 20 minutes of independent driving with the possible use of a sat nav. For example, to follow road signs and markings to a certain destination. The test duration is about 40 minutes in which time you should not accumulate more than 15 minor driving faults and no serious/dangerous faults.

Theory and hazard perception

The Theory Test is a multiple choice test and is conducted on a touch screen computer at your local test centre.

You must answer all of the questions or you will lose marks. You will have 57 minutes to answer the 50 questions, including 5 case study questions covering the whole syllabus, which is ample time for those who have studied seriously. To pass, you must give 43 correct answers.

The Hazard Perception Test consists of 14 computer-generated clips that contain one, hazard, and one clips with two hazards. You are asked to watch the clip and, using the mouse, click to flag an incident as they see it develop. On the clip with two incidents, they must flag both.

The earlier a candidate notices a developing hazard and responds, the higher the score. The highest score for each hazard is 5 points.

After completing the test, the candidate receives a paper printout showing grades for both the multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception test. They must pass both tests to continue to the practical test; if they fail either part, both must be taken again. The pass mark for cars is 44 of 75

Pass Plus programme

Statistics prove that the risk of having a crash is highest during the first years of driving after passing the driving test. This is why the Government launched the Pass Plus programme. Backed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA formally DSA) and major motor insurance companies, it is designed to help new drivers gain more experience and become better equipped for the demands of modern driving.

The course needs to be taken within twelve months of passing your driving test to qualify for the insurance benefits. The Pass Plus course is a six-hour module, which will include motorway, bad weather, city and rural driving. After completion, you will be able to obtain a discount from many insurance companies, subject to your personal circumstances. This course has proved popular because the saving on insurance is far greater than the cost of the course.
